Fiber that doesn't cause gas: fiber types compared by grams and how much they ferment

Some fibers ferment fast and make more gas. What the studies compared, gram by gram, and where they stop.

Key points

  • Some gas from fiber is expected, NIDDK explains, and fibers ferment at different speeds.
  • In a lab model of the colon, inulin made more hydrogen and total gas than psyllium or wheat dextrin. That was a lab test, not a study in people.
  • NIDDK advises adults to get 22 to 34 grams of fiber a day, added a little at a time, with plenty of liquids.

Why some fiber makes more gas

Your stomach and small intestine do not fully digest some carbohydrates, and fiber is one of them. NIDDK explains that these carbohydrates pass to the large intestine, where bacteria break them down and create gas. Gas is part of how fiber is digested. What changes from one fiber to the next is how much, and how fast.

A 2010 lab study put three common fiber types through a model of colon fermentation for 24 hours. Inulin produced significantly more hydrogen and total gas than psyllium or wheat dextrin. The authors note that these differences may affect how well people tolerate each fiber, and that this needs more study. (Timm 2010, lab model)

What the studies compared

Fiber typeIn the lab model (Timm 2010)In people (Alhasani 2025)
Psyllium huskLess hydrogen and total gas than inulinTaken with inulin by 17 healthy adults, it lowered gas in the first six hours but not over 24 hours

Wheat dextrinLess hydrogen and total gas than inulinNot part of the trial

On labels, FDA counts psyllium husk and guar gum as dietary fiber, and says it intends to propose adding inulin. (FDA)

Does psyllium cancel out the gas from inulin?

Not fully, in the one human trial we found. In 2025, researchers gave 17 healthy adults 20 g of inulin, either alone or with 20 g of psyllium, and measured breath hydrogen for 24 hours. Psyllium lowered hydrogen in the first six hours but not over the whole day. The authors conclude that psyllium delays when inulin reaches the colon, rather than reducing fermentation there. (Alhasani 2025)

It was a small, single-day study in healthy people. It does not tell you how a daily fiber would feel over weeks. What psyllium is, and how many grams sit in a capsule or a scoop, is in our guide to psyllium fiber supplements.

How to add fiber with less discomfort

  1. Add it a little at a time, so your body gets used to the change. (NIDDK)
  2. Drink plenty of liquids to help the fiber work better, and ask a health care professional how much is right for you. (NIDDK)
  3. Count food first. Whole grains, beans and lentils, fruits, vegetables and nuts are all on NIDDK's list of fiber sources.
  4. If gas does not settle, talk with your doctor before adding other supplements or probiotics. (NIDDK)

Morning or night, before or after meals, and how far to keep fiber from your medicines: those timing questions have their own answer in our guide to when to take a fiber supplement.

Physician's Choice fiber products

Physician's Choice, the publisher of this site, makes three fiber supplements. Easy Mix Fiber is a powder with 6 g of soluble fiber per heaping spoonful (6.7 g), from soluble corn fiber and guar fiber, about 24 servings per tub. Fiber Gummies give 5 g of fiber from chicory root fiber per 2 gummies, with under 1 g of total sugars and 0 g added sugars. Psyllium Husk Fiber gives 2 g of fiber from 2.6 g of psyllium husk per 5 capsules. Which one fits depends on the form you like and on how your body handles each fiber type. A side-by-side of seven fiber types, from methylcellulose to pectin, is in our guide what is a good fiber supplement. If you are weighing a product that adds a probiotic to the fiber, our guide fiber supplements with probiotics in them shows what to check, gram by gram. What the sugar and sweetener lines on a gummy panel mean is in our guide to fiber gummies without the candy.

Label details for two fibers are being confirmed with Physician's Choice: whether the chicory root fiber in Fiber Gummies is inulin, and which soluble corn fiber and guar fiber Easy Mix Fiber uses. Until then, this page does not say how much those fibers ferment.

How we reported this

Reader questions
Our starting point was a pull of 1,031 public Reddit posts from 228 communities, dated Sep 5 to Oct 5, 2026, of which 143 dealt with fiber. How to take psyllium husk came up in 6 of them, and how much fiber is enough, and of what kind, in 5.
