Does fiber help with diarrhea? Which fiber firms loose stools, and which makes them worse

The other direction from constipation: which fiber firmed loose stools in studies and which did not, how much was given, what to eat and drink while diarrhea lasts, and the signs that mean a doctor.

The answer

Yes, if it is soluble, gel-forming fiber such as psyllium. In a 1993 study of 9 healthy people with drug-induced watery diarrhea, psyllium made stools firmer, while wheat bran and calcium polycarbophil did not. Inulin did not firm stools in two trials in healthy adults. NIDDK says sugar alcohols can cause diarrhea in some people, and that diarrhea lasting more than 2 days needs a doctor.

Five facts

  • Psyllium: in 9 healthy people with diarrhea brought on by a drug, psyllium made stools firmer and raised their viscosity; in a dose test in 6 people, 9, 18 and 30 g a day raised viscosity almost in line with the dose. [Eherer et al., 1993]
  • Same water, less loose: psyllium made loose stools less loose without changing the percentage of water in them. [Wenzl et al., 1995]
  • Wheat bran: the insoluble fiber left stool consistency unchanged in the 1993 study, and UCSF Health lists it with nuts, seeds, whole grains and dried fruits as foods to cut back on to help relieve diarrhea. [Eherer et al., 1993; UCSF Health]
  • Inulin: 7.5 g a day of agave inulin made stools softer and more frequent in 29 healthy adults, and 20 g a day of chicory inulin left 12 healthy men's bowel function unchanged apart from more flatulence. [Holscher et al., 2014; Slavin and Feirtag, 2011]
  • 8 to 10 glasses of clear fluids a day, preferably water, plus at least 1 cup (240 milliliters) after each loose bowel movement, is the MedlinePlus advice. [MedlinePlus]

Which fiber helps with diarrhea?

Soluble, gel-forming fiber, and psyllium is the one with studies behind it. A Cleveland Clinic article lists diarrhea relief among psyllium husk's benefits: "It helps bind loose stools." MedlinePlus notes that a doctor may also prescribe psyllium for diarrhea. In a Baylor study, psyllium firmed stools that wheat bran and calcium polycarbophil, a water-holding agent, left as they were.123

That 1993 study, from Baylor University Medical Center with NIDDK grant support, took on what its authors call a possible paradox: the same fibers used for constipation are sometimes used for diarrhea too. Nine healthy people took phenolphthalein, a drug that brings on watery diarrhea, and then placebo, psyllium, calcium polycarbophil and wheat bran in random order. In a separate dose test in 6 people, 9, 18 and 30 g of psyllium a day raised stool viscosity almost in a straight line.3

"Psyllium, but not calcium polycarbophil or wheat bran, improves fecal consistency and viscosity in subjects with experimentally-induced secretory diarrhea."

Eherer, Santa Ana, Porter and Fordtran, Gastroenterology, 1993

How does psyllium firm loose stools?

By holding water, not by taking it away. A second Baylor study found that psyllium made loose stools less loose without changing the percentage of water in them, and its authors explain looseness as the ratio of stool water to how much water the stool's solids can hold. The effect of psyllium, they write, "could be explained by consideration of the ratio of fecal water to water-holding capacity of insoluble solids."4

It also slows things down. In a 1998 crossover study in Nottingham, 8 people took lactulose, a sugar given to loosen stools, three times a day, with and without 3.5 g of psyllium each time. With psyllium, the stomach took 87 minutes instead of 69 to empty half of a test meal, the meal moved more slowly through the colon, and breath hydrogen, a by-product of fermentation, rose later. The authors suggest psyllium slowed the stomach by making the meal more viscous.5

UCSF Health puts the general rule in one line: "Insoluble fiber can increase the rate of food passing through the digestive tract, whereas soluble fiber can decrease the rate."6 What psyllium husk is made of, and why its gel resists fermentation, is in what is psyllium husk?

Which fibers can make diarrhea worse?

Insoluble fiber, fermentable fibers in large amounts, and sugar alcohols. UCSF Health says that when the gut is irritated, a normal amount of insoluble fiber may be too much, and that cutting back on it may help relieve diarrhea. Inulin did not firm stools in two trials in healthy adults, and NIDDK says sugar alcohols may cause diarrhea in some people.67810

UCSF's list of insoluble foods to cut back on is nuts, seeds, wheat bran, whole grains and dried fruits.6 Even psyllium is not for everyone: a Cleveland Clinic article lists diarrhea among its possible side effects.1

Fermentable fibers gave different results. In 29 healthy adults, 7.5 g a day of agave inulin made stools softer and bowel movements more frequent, without raising diarrhea scores.7 In a 1995 Paris study, 14 healthy volunteers ate candies made with a sweetener containing fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), in rising amounts; cramps and diarrhea did not appear until 50 g a day, after excess gas that began above 30 g.9 Which fibers make the most gas is covered in fiber that doesn't cause gas.

Sugar alcohols are not fiber, but they can sit on the same labels. NIDDK lists foods and drinks with sugar alcohols, such as sugarless gum and candies, among those to avoid with acute diarrhea, and notes that some liquid medicines contain sorbitol, mannitol or xylitol, which may also cause diarrhea in some people.1110 Where they show up on a gummy panel is in fiber gummies: sugar, sweeteners and fiber grams.

What should you eat when you have diarrhea?

For short-term diarrhea, mostly your normal diet once you feel like eating, NIDDK says, minus a short list of foods and drinks. Cleveland Clinic suggests bland foods such as bananas, rice, applesauce and toast, and UCSF Health points to soluble fiber foods such as oatmeal, applesauce, bananas and potatoes.11126

Prunes are on the MedlinePlus list of fruits that can cause gas. They are also among the foods tested for the opposite problem, in foods that help constipation.13

Should you take a fiber supplement when you have diarrhea?

Ask first. MedlinePlus tells people with diarrhea to ask their provider about taking a fiber supplement to add bulk to their stools, and its psyllium page notes that a doctor may prescribe psyllium for diarrhea. NIDDK says most people with short-term diarrhea can go back to their normal diet, and that an adult with diarrhea lasting more than 2 days should talk with a doctor right away.1321110

If you do take psyllium, it still needs liquid with every dose, and some medicines need to be spaced from it; what two drug references say on both is in what is psyllium husk?, and timing is in when to take a fiber supplement. The amounts in the studies above, 9 to 30 g of psyllium a day, were research doses chosen by the investigators, not directions for home use.3

How much should you drink when you have diarrhea?

More than usual. MedlinePlus advises 8 to 10 glasses of clear fluids a day, preferably water, plus at least 1 cup (240 milliliters) every time you have a loose bowel movement. NIDDK explains why: loose stools remove more fluid and electrolytes from the body than solid stools do, and if you cannot drink enough liquids or oral rehydration solutions, dehydration can become serious, though serious harm is rare.1314

NIDDK's list of dehydration signs runs: a dry mouth or extreme thirst, peeing less than usual, tiredness, dizziness or lightheadedness, dark-colored urine, pinched skin that is slow to flatten back, and sunken eyes or cheeks. NIDDK says any of these calls for a doctor without delay.10 NIDDK also says people who are pregnant, over 65, taking antibiotics or living with a weakened immune system are more likely to have problems from diarrhea and should keep in touch with their doctor.10

Where Physician's Choice fits

Psyllium Husk FiberLabel read Oct 18, 2026

Physician's Choice, which publishes this site, sells psyllium in capsules. Its Psyllium Husk Fiber panel shows 2.6 g of psyllium husk, with 2 g of soluble fiber, per 5 capsules, and 60 servings to the bottle.15

No study cited here tested it.

In brief

Soluble, gel-forming psyllium is the fiber with evidence for firmer stools: it holds water in a gel and slows the gut, while wheat bran and inulin did not firm stools and sugar alcohols can loosen them. Drink well, eat plainly, and get medical advice when diarrhea goes on past 2 days or brings signs of dehydration, blood or a high fever.

Diarrhea and fiber, answered

Does fiber help with diarrhea?

Soluble, gel-forming fiber can. In a 1993 study, psyllium made loose stools firmer in 9 healthy people with drug-induced diarrhea, while wheat bran and calcium polycarbophil did not. A Cleveland Clinic article says psyllium helps bind loose stools. MedlinePlus says to ask your provider about taking a fiber supplement.

What fiber is best for diarrhea?

None of the sources here names a single one. The fiber with studies behind firmer stools is psyllium, which is soluble and gel-forming, and UCSF Health adds soluble fiber foods such as oatmeal, applesauce, bananas and potatoes. UCSF says cutting back on insoluble fiber may help, and inulin did not firm stools in trials.

Can too much fiber cause diarrhea?

It can. A Cleveland Clinic article lists diarrhea among psyllium's possible side effects, and in a 1995 study of a sweetener made with FOS, healthy volunteers got diarrhea at 50 g a day. NIDDK says sugar alcohols, common in sugar-free candies and gum, may cause diarrhea in some people.

Should you stop eating fiber when you have diarrhea?

Not all of it. NIDDK says most people with short-term diarrhea can go back to their normal diet when they feel like eating, minus alcohol, caffeine, sugar alcohols, high-fat foods and large amounts of some sugars. UCSF Health suggests cutting back on insoluble fiber and choosing soluble fiber foods such as oatmeal and bananas.

When should you see a doctor for diarrhea?

Right away, NIDDK says, when an adult's diarrhea goes past 2 days, or brings a high fever, six or more loose stools a day, severe pain in the abdomen or rectum, black, tarry or bloody stools, frequent vomiting, a change in mental state, or signs of dehydration such as extreme thirst.
